INSTRUCTIONS FOR REFINISHING STEERING WHEELS
For those of you who think that these steering wheels have a high gloss finish like a bowling ball, you are unfortunately wrong.
It looks like Ford used a very coarse file for deburring.
To keep costs as low as possible, here are some helpful tips for a fine finish on your steering wheel.
1. Use an exacto knife or a utility knife to first remove the excess burr from the
Parting line. (where the mold halves come together). and not to cut too deeply into the steering wheel.
2. Take a fine file and file the mold line until it blends with the wheel.
3. Now the work begins! Take some 600 grit sandpaper (wet) and
and wet sand the areas you just filed. Wet sand these areas until the
Form line disappears. Allow the grinding wheel to harden and dry.
4. Now the areas you wet sanded will look a little duller
than the rest of the steering wheel. Rub these dull areas by hand with a fine brush
buffing compound. The more you polish, the better your end result will be.
